Holmium is a rare earth metal that is rarely found on its own. It is named after the Latin name for the city of Stockholm and was discovered in 1878. Holmium has the highest magnetic permeability of any element, so it is used for the pole pieces of the strongest static magnets. Holmium also absorbs neutrons, so it is used as a burnable poison in nuclear reactors.
