Yttrium is considered a rare earth element and is silvery-metallic in color. It is never found in Earth as a free element but is always with lanthanide elements in rare earth minerals. Yttrium is mainly used in LED’s and phosphors but is also found in many other applications including electrodes, lasers, various medical applications and electrolytes. Yttrium can cause lung disease in humans and therefore has no biological role.
