Samarium is a hard, silvery metal and is found in Earth’s crust. Samarium is commercially used in samarium-cobalt magnets, which is a strong permanent magnet. It is also used as a radioisotope samarium-153 which is the main component of the drug samarium lexidronam, which kills cancer cells in lung cancer, breast cancer, prostate cancer, and osteosarcoma. If samarium reaches 150 degrees Celsius, it can spontaneously ignite!
