Apohis was first spotted by astronomers in June 2004, and is named after the Egyptian god of evil and destruction. Initially, astronomers were concerned about a possible collision between Apophis and Earth in 2029. With a width of about 3.5 football fields, the consequences of Apophis' impact would have been significant.
On April 13, 2029, Apophis will streak over the United States., and it will gain enough brightness to match that of the stars in the Little Dipper.
