Eta Carinae is a double-star system, residing about 7,500 light years away in the constellation Carina. It contains two stars with a combined luminosity five million times greater than the Sun and is the only known star to produce ultraviolet laser emissions. First categorized by Edmond Halley in 1677, the star system is one of the biggest and easiest for astronomers to study.
