Vesta was the fourth asteroid to be discovered.  German astronomer Heinrich Wilhelm Olbers found it in 1807 while searching in the constellation Virgo the Maiden.

NASA's Dawn spacecraft began orbiting Vesta on July 16, 2011 and left on September 4, 2012 to travel to the asteroid Ceres.  This 3D model was made using images Dawn sent back to earth.  The spacecraft revealed that Vesta has a metal-rich core and dark spots and streaks on its surface, probably caused by asteroid impacts.
