Description

Jon Lomberg and Astronomy magazine are releasing an exclusive, limited-edition print of Galactic Tidal Star Streams.  This unique poster, created by the artist of Portrait of the Milky Way and Encyclopedia Galactica, depicts an idealized galaxy with a brilliant star stream surrounding it.

Tidal star streams are rivers of stolen stars that have been ripped from their homes by gravity when larger galaxies pull in and consume smaller ones.  As the stream encircles its captor, such as the stunning spiral galaxy depicted here, its shape may reveal hidden clues about dark matter — the mysterious material that helps shape our universe.  Our own galaxy’s Sagittarius Dwarf star stream is a prominent feature on our Portrait of the Milky Way poster.

Galactic Tidal Star Streams represents a unique science/art collaboration between astronomer David Martinez-Delgado, who studies these tidal star streams, and Lomberg, whose art has brought many of Carl Sagan’s ideas to life.

Jon Lomberg says, "I am so grateful to David Martinez-Delgado for asking me to paint this. I love star streams - it seems they're like a galaxy's sensitive cat's whiskers, showing us what cannot be seen."

This stunning 16" x 20" glossy print arrives rolled in a tube and comes with an informational guide, describing the discovery and significance of tidal star streams, as well as the collaboration between Martinez-Delgado and Lomberg.
